If you've ever spent a late night in front of a computer then you likely know it's not the most eye-friendly experience.

Luckily, apps like f.lux, which change the color temperature of displays, have been around for some time to help reduce eye strain. Now, one Mac app is taking the concept to the next level by allowing you to change the display to any color you want.

NightTone will be familiar to anyone who has used f.lux on Mac or the Night Shift feature in iOS 9. Like both of those, Night Tone allows you to change the color temperature of your display. But unlike f.lux and Hight Shift, which only make the light more or less orange, NightTone allows you to make the display any colored light you want.

The $2.99 app lives in the Mac menubar. There you can turn it on or off, change the color of your display and adjust other settings. Like f.lux and Apple's Night Shift, you can set a custom schedule for when you want it to activate and deactivate each day.

The app comes with five preset color palettes:

  • "warm orange for late working hours"

  • "soft black for inverted colors for dark rooms"

  • "noisy green for long text reading"

  • "silky blue for rooms with a lot of sunlight"

  • "tender white for movie nights or dark photo work"

The goal of NightTone and other apps like it is to make reading and other screen-enabled activities easier at night. Studies have shown that looking at devices before bed can negatively impact your sleep. But changing the color temperature of the light stands to make that nighttime reading and browsing much less disruptive. Even though you really should learn to stop using your smartphone in bed.
