No Man's Sky is under investigation from the UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) over allegations that its promotional material is misleading in regards to the features in the actual game.

The most hyped video game release of the year has been met with a mixed reception among players complaining of false advertising and bugs that heavily affect the overall performance on PCs.

The ASA, an independent regulator whose role is to investigate complaints made about ads, sales promotions or direct marketing, confirmed to Mashable that it is in touch with Hello Games and Valve on the issue.

Reddit user AzzerUK issued a formal complaint to the ASA as he feels the game's trailers, screenshots, and general information are "misleading and misrepresenting" of the features in the game.

In a post he claimed both Hello Games and Valve have been contacted by the regulator and told to respond to the following issues:

According to AzzerUK, ASA also said: "We will ensure the advertisers are made aware of any points relating to other marketing material under their control (such as the Hello Games YouTube channel and website)."

"The outcomes of ASA investigations are cross-applicable to other marketing making the same claims, so any decision reached in relation to the Steam page would apply to other advertising for No Man’s Sky where the same (or materially similar) claims appear."

ASA told Mashable it cannot comment on an ongoing investigation.
