Miami-based Norwegian Cruises is adding a fifth ship to its European fleet in summer 2017.

The expansion highlights the growth of the cruise industry on the continent, which has nearly quadrupled in the past 20 years.

The Norwegian Getaway, a 3,969-passenger vessel usually based in Miami, will be relocated to Copenhagen for eight- and nine-night voyages from May to October, the company announced Tuesday.

The Getaway is the line's second-newest ship.

The itinerary "will allow guests to explore UNESCO World Heritage sites, take in the picturesque Baltic countryside and experience the unique history, cultures and architecture of these famed European cities," the company said. "The itinerary includes calls in Tallinn, Estonia; Helsinki, Finland; Stockholm, Sweden; along with an overnight in St. Petersburg, Russia."

The other Norwegian ships sailing in Europe in 2017 will be the Norwegian Jade, out of Hamburg and making a stop in the UK; the Norwegian Epic, in the western Mediterranean; the Norwegian Spirit, cruising between Barcelona and Venice; and Norwegian Star, from Venice to the Greek Isles.
