Viral NYC subway photo shows America at its best

Happy Fourth of July!

As millions of Americans celebrated the Fourth of July holiday, one picture that shot to the top of Reddit tells a positive story of diversity and integration that fits perfectly with the ideals behind Independence Day.

The picture, taken a few days ago by Rachel MacKnight on the New York City's C Train subway, shows two families who appear to be from different backgrounds smiling gleefully at each other:

MacKnight posted the picture on Twitter, where it received more than 10,000 retweets and 40,000 likes. People reacted, sending similar heartwarming pictures:

But it was on Reddit that the picture went completely viral.

After Go_Habs_Go31 posted it on social media, on Independence Day, the picture, with the caption "This is what makes America great. Happy 4th of July." got 89,637 points (68% upvoted).

A few months ago, native New Yorker Jackie Summers posted a photo on Facebook and Twitter that shows a Jewish Hasidic man and his wife sitting on a New York City subway car next to a Muslim woman in hijab holding a baby.

Caption read: “A Taoist (me) gives up his seat so a Hasidic couple could sit together. They scoot over so a Muslim mother could sit and nurse her baby, on Easter Sunday. This is my America: people letting people be people.”

The picture also fits pretty well in what Apple CEO Tim Cook tweeted to wish everyone a happy Independence Day.

Cook was referring to this particular quote from former President Franklin D. Roosevelt: "Remember, remember always, that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists."
