Speaking in Illinois at a fundraiser, President Barack Obama weighed in on the lewd comments made by Donald Trump in a 2005 tape that was leaked on Friday afternoon.

Obama, who has not held back in expressing his ire for Trump, lamented the "disturbing" nature of the election and the "demeaning" nature of Trump's comments while also referring to the GOP candidate as "insecure." Obama was in Illinois helping Rep. Tammy Duckworth raise funds for her U.S. Senate campaign.

Obama's comments are transcribed below.

One of the most disturbing things about this election is just the unbelievable rhetoric coming from the top of the Republican ticket. I don't need to repeat it. There are children in the room.

But demeaning women, degrading women, but also minorities, immigrants, people of other faiths, mocking the disabled, insulting our troops, insulting our veterans. That tells you a couple things.

It tells you that he's insecure enough that he pumps himself up by putting other people down, not a character trait that I would advise for somebody in the Oval Office.

It tells you that he doesn't care much about the basic values we try to impart to our kids. It tells you he'd be careless with the stability and the respect that a real vibrant democracy requires."

The president's comments come just hours ahead of the highly anticipated second debate between Trump and the Democratic presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton.

Obama's comments are the latest in the fall-out for Trump, who has seen dozens of Republicans abandon their support of him in the days since the tape leaked.

Despite publishing a video apology for the comments late Friday night, Trump has returned to form, using his Twitter account to bluster about the election and those Republicans who have abandoned him.

Sunday night's debate begins at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT and can be viewed in a number of ways, including on TV, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook.
