Oculus Rift will arrive late for some users, but with free shipping

Here's a bit of bittersweet news for folks who have pre-ordered the Oculus Rift and are still waiting for it to arrive: If you ordered before (and including) April 1, your unit might arrive late, but shipping will be free. 

Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe said so in a Tweet Saturday, claiming the first set of Rifts is going out slower then estimated, which is why the company will compensate with free shipping -- and that includes international orders.

Oculus Rift customers later received an email saying they would receive a new shipping date on April 12 and clarifying the delay is due to an "unexpected component shortage."

We've contacted Oculus Rift for more details about the delay, but have not yet heard from them. 

Pre-orders for the Oculus Rift opened in January, with the original shipping date being late March, but it got pushed as far as June within 24 hours. 

The VR headset (without the additional Touch controllers, which will come later in the year) costs $599, which does not include the (pretty powerful) computer needed to power it. Read our review here
