You can now add way older photos to your Instagram story

Instagram is experimenting with a new feature allowing users to upload photos to their stories that are up to a week old.

At long last, the 24-hour limit is no more. You can now upload photos to your Instagram Story that are more than 24 hours old.

When uploading a story, you can now press the camera roll button on the left of the screen and be shown your entire camera roll.

When you upload a story that's more than 24 hours old, a sticker of the photo's date will appear. You can move and resize it, just like any other sticker.

Even after its public release, this feature may not change much about the Stories experience. As one user noted, it has always been easy to post older photos as Stories by screenshotting or editing them.

But the new feature is an important symbolic move for Instagram Stories. The Instagram Stories platform, since its launch last August, has long been known as a real-time public timeline, all but identical to the feature of the same name developed by its competitor Snapchat. The app's seal of approval will encourage users to construct longer and more in-depth narratives for their followers, in addition to the stand-alone snapshots that currently tend to appear in Stories.

The change also reflects yet another push to emulate the widespread success of Snapchat Stories, which allows users to post photos of any age.

Correction: November 10, 2017

An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that users could now only upload photos that were up to a week old. Users can upload photos of any age.
