On Monday, Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" featuring Billy Ray Cyrus made history as the longest-running No. 1 track to ever hit the Billboard Hot 100.

The prestigious record required a daunting 17 weeks as the most popular song across radio and online streaming within the United States. The accolade was previously shared by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day" and Luis Fonsi's "Despacito" — both of which ended their No. 1 reigns at a 16-week tie.

"Did I know it would become the longest-running No. 1 song of all time?" Lil Nas reflected of his track's surprise success on Twitter.

"No! But I am so thankful that this blessing has been placed upon me. This song has changed my life, and the way I see the world around me in less than a year."

The history-making victory comes after "Old Town Road" debuted to controversy earlier this year.

In March, Billboard deemed Lil Nas's solo take on "Old Town Road" unfit to top their Hot Country Chart, claiming it failed to embrace "enough elements of today’s country music." The contentious move resulted in Lil Nas re-releasing the song many times — as well as engaging in a number of timely discussions about racism within the music industry.

Lil Nas's impressive ability to turn his work into a cultural moment, gaining major support on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter, has similarly aided in the song's visibility. Children belting "Old Town Road," an Area 51-themed music video, and numerous other viral moments orchestrated by Lil Nas have kept the catchy tune a regular part of the online conversation.

By creating a community of support around "Old Town Road," Lil Nas was able to push his voice to the forefront of both the hiphop and country music scenes.

"Thank you to every single person who has been apart of this journey," Lil Nas continued in his statement on Twitter. "As I said before, it's just the beginning!"

In other words? Yee-fucking-haw!
