OnePlus 5 confirmed to be a performance beast

Hey, OnePlus fans: You can rest easy knowing the OnePlus 5, slated for launch sometime this summer, will be just as powerful as the Samsung Galaxy S8.

Chipmaker Qualcomm has confirmed the much-rumored and highly anticipated phone will come with its latest Snapdragon 835 chipset.

"When we began developing the OnePlus 5, we envisioned a smartphone with flawlessly smooth performance," OnePlus CEO Pete Lau wrote in a forum post.

Lau says the company chose the Snapdragon 835 for its "smooth, powerful, and efficient performance" but also went through great lengths to optimize its OyxgenOS software (its own lightweight customizations that sit on top of stock Android) to make sure everything feels smooth -- a very Apple-like attention to detail.

That's good to hear because as we already know, specs aren't everything. Two phones might have the same exact specs -- processor, RAM, storage, and even camera image sensor -- but they'll perform very differently because the software connecting all these components differs. Having the latest and greatest processor is great, but the software matters just as much (if not more) nowadays.

"One of the main areas we wanted to improve was touch latency. Our engineers tested why scrolling occasionally differed between phones. There wasn't a lot of precedent for them to work with -- no benchmarks, no industry case studies to learn from. So we used a special high-speed camera to track screen movements and measure input speeds. As a result, apps respond quickly to your touch for a seamless user experience."

Besides the confirmed chipset, there aren't many official details on the OnePlus 5. The company's only teased a few things on Twitter.

Recent rumors claim the phone will nix the headphone jack, but OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei seems to suggest otherwise. When a fan asked Pei where the headphone jack went, he responded with:

Not a lot to go on there, but it sounds like the OnePlus 5 will probably still have a headphone jack, but it'll be located at the top of the phone instead of on the bottom, just like on the OnePlus 3T.

Other rumored specs include an all-metal body with dimensions similar to the OnePlus 3T, an upgraded 5.5-inch Quad HD screen, 8GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot, and a huge 4,000 mAh battery.

The phone will also reportedly come with a 23-megapixel rear camera and a 16MP selfie camera. Whether it'll have a dual camera setup on the back, however, is still up in the air.

OnePlus is riding high on the success of last year's OnePlus 3 and 3T. A startup phone maker really couldn't ask for a better cult-like following. Though the OnePlus 5 is expected to cost more than than the 3T, which costs $439 unlocked, it should still be comfortably less than the $700+ competitors like Samsung and LG charge for their 2017 flagships.
