Prepare for everything in your life to become ChatGPT-ed.

On Wednesday, OpenAI announced an API for ChatGPT and Whisper, another one of its products which transcribes speech to text. This means third-party developers will be able to integrate ChatGPT and Whisper's artificial intelligence technology for their own products and services.

Companies have already jumped on this new offering. Earlier this week, Snap Inc. announced My AI for Snapchat+ which allows Snapchat Plus subscribers to message ChatGPT's chatbot within the app. Instacart, Shopify's consumer app Shop, Quizlet, and Speak are other apps that now have ChatGPT integration.

The apps use cases vary depending on the purpose of the app, but they all showcase the technology's chat feature and AI-driven recommendations. Developers using the API will get access to the latest model, called ChatGPT 3.5 Turbo, which was released alongside the announcement.

Developers had already been using ChatGPT's technology through OpenAI's preexisting API tool. But now, a dedicated open-source platform for the latest ChatGPT model will make it significantly cheaper and more accessible to third-parties. If you thought AI technology was suddenly being used everywhere, it's about to be even more ubiquitous — now with the buzzy brand recognition and advanced intelligence ChatGPT is known for.

OpenAI was able to launch its API program because of a "90 percent cost reduction for ChatGPT since December," said the announcement. "We’re now passing through those savings to API users."

Back in December 2022, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the cost of running ChatGPT is "eye-watering" but since then, the company has found ways for ChatGPT and Whisper to achieve "much faster and cost-effective results." The ChatGPT API costs $0.002 per 1,000 tokens, which, according to the announcement is "10x cheaper than our existing GPT-3.5 models." Whisper will cost $0.006 per minute.

Now that every developer can access OpenAI's game-changing technology, the floodgates for AI integration are officially open.
