HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- "Hollywood? Racist!"

That was one of the many chants heard from the crowd of 100 plus #OscarsSoWhite supporters here, who gathered just blocks away from the Dolby Theatre on Sunday to call attention to the Film Academy's lack of diversity.

Led by Rev. Al Sharpton, the group was there to do one thing and one thing only: to "put the Academy on notice."

“We know you couldn’t break your contracts this year, but we are putting you on notice," Sharpton said. "If you want to have another all-white Oscars, we will cut you off."

"Amen!" people in the crowd cheered.

The peaceful protest, which was packed with media outlets from across the globe, was just one of many planned Oscar demonstrations -- both virtual and physical -- happening across the U.S. on the night of the ceremony.

It was hosted by a coalition of Los Angeles civil rights groups, including the Project Islamic Hope, National Action Network, Los Angeles Urban League and Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable.

Protesters held signs that read everything from "Oscars = white machine" to "We demand opportunity, diversity, inclusion and justice in Hollywood."

"We pay, we must have a say -- we want you [Hollywood] to know that we are more than just a ticket buyer we want to see diversity," Molly Bell, of Compton, said, addressing the rally. "Oscar, you are so white you don't even know we have a black president...shame, shame, shame on you."

The #OscarsSoWhite movement, backed by women, minorities and other historically marginalized communities, has been growing in momentum ever since the the Oscars neglected to select diverse nominees for the second year in a row

"I think the hashtag allowed people to have a rallying point and an easy way to enter the conversation," April Reign, founder of the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag told Mashable in a phone interview last week. "I appreciate the fact that so many people are using their own platforms to discuss what a serious issue this is."

Reign, the managing editor of BroadwayBlack.com, is encouraging people to watch and live tweet the 1999 movie The Wood rather than the Oscars. She did the same thing last year, urging Twitter users to watch Coming to America

While the hashtag is now 15 months old, Reign said the idea behind it is still going strong.

"Change is hard—I get that—but at the same time, you have to see the writing on the wall," she said. "And that writing says it is time for change and that your bottom line may be affected if you don’t start thinking from a broader mindset."

In addition to these boycotts, Creed director Ryan Coogler and Selma director Ava DuVernay attended a benefit in Flint, Mich. to support residents enduring a water crisis there. Other celebrities in attendance included Janelle Monae and comedian Hannibal Buress

Those still hoping to tune in to some kind of an awards show can watch the All Def Movie Awards on Fusion instead. The event, hosted by Tony Rock (Oscars host Chris Rock's brother), was hosted by media mogul Russell Simmons.
