Indian restaurant Pappadavada is helping combat both food waste and hunger with a new community refrigerator.

Minu Pauline, who owns the Kochi eatery, decided to spearhead the fridge project after noticing a woman picking through her restaurant's trash.

Pauline originally intended to fill the fridge with leftover food from Pappadavada, but it's since become a "community fridge" of sorts, with donations pouring in from other local businesses and individuals.

The fridge, which is affectionately called nanma maram, or "tree of goodness," is always unsupervised and always open. So far, that hasn't been a problem -- a testament to the sense of community that led to its creation.

Now, the community is hoping to decrease the amount of food its businesses throw out every day -- food that could be used to help someone in need.

"Money is yours, but resources belong to society," Pauline said.
