Sir Patrick Stewart has announced he's applying for U.S. citizenship to step up the fight against President Donald Trump.

The X-Men star recently tweeted during a trip to Washington D.C. that he had "the worst night's sleep for years and years and years", joking that Trump was responsible for that.

Stewart, who is a British citizen, defended his tweet in an interview on The View, calling it "fairly innocent" and adding he "did not directly insult your president".

To which Whoopi Goldberg said in response: "Not mine".

Then host Joy Behar asked if Stewart would be willing to take Trump off American's hands:

"We have our own problems -- we have Brexit."

"I'm not a [U.S.] citizen," he responded. " “However, there is, maybe it’s the only good thing, as the result of this election: I am now applying for citizenship. Because I want to be an American too."

“All of my friends in Washington said, ‘There is one thing you can do. Fight, fight, oppose, oppose,’” Stewart said.
