Patton Oswalt has written a heartbreaking tribute to his late wife, Michelle McNamara, for Time

The comedian's wife died in her sleep in late April. No cause of death was reported at the time. McNamara was a true crime writer and founder of the website True Crime Diary. The couple were married for 11 years and have a 7-year daughter, Alice.

In his essay, Oswalt remembers the way his wife "steered her life with joyous, wicked curiosity." He also highlights McNamara's career achievements, digging deep into her past not just as a crime writer, but also her time working in Chicago for a young Michelle Obama.

He also shares a heartbreaking quote from his daughter about the loss of McNamara: "When your mom dies you’re the best memory of her. Everything you do and say is a memory of her.”

Here's a short passage from the essay, which Oswalt eventually ends with a simple declaration: "I love her." Read the rest at Time:

The reaction to her passing, the people who are shocked at her senseless absence, is a testament to how she steered her life with joyous, wicked curiosity. Cops and comedians call—speechless or sending curt regards. Her family is devastated but can’t help remember all of the times she made them laugh or comforted them, and they smile and laugh themselves. She hasn’t left a void. She’s left a blast crater.
