If you're a politician making a light-hearted St Patrick's Day reference, it's important to get it right. Very important.

If you don't -- as Paul Ryan very much didn't when he held up a woeful pint of Guinness at the recent Washington D.C. Friends of Ireland luncheon on Thursday -- there's every chance that Ireland will take note.

On Thursday, Irish journalist Naomi O'Leary shared the following image.

It wasn't long before the jokes started.

People really weren't fans of Ryan's Guinness.

Things escalated quickly.

Eventually, people began sharing examples of how it should be done.

All in all, not the best day for U.S.-Irish relations.
