After 5 seasons and dozens of eerily prophetic storylines, CBS is bringing Person of Interest to an end, Mashable confirms.

Person of Interest stars Jim Caviezel and Michael Emerson in the lead roles of Reese and Finch, an unlikely duo who prevent crimes using an advanced surveillance system called "the Machine."

The news of the show's axing came on the same day the network announced the start date for what will now be the show's last season.

Season 5 will start May 3 and air twice a week -- Mondays and Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET -- before finishing up its run on June 21.

During its run the show, which counts J.J. Abrams and Jonathan Nolan among its EPS, the show was praised by critics for its smart, forward-thinking and sometimes predictive writing. For example, it did an episode about NSA whistle-blower before anyone knew the name Edward Snowden.

Though no doubt disappointing news to fans, the news should come as no huge surprise. Back in January, Abrams told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour that he anticipated Season 5 being the show's last due to dwindling ratings.
