Game of Thrones fans had a lot of responses to Daenerys and Jon hooking up in the Season 7 finale, but what was going through Tyrion Lannister's mind, right outside the door?

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Emmy nominee (and previous winner for Thrones) Peter Dinklage broke down Tyrion's emotion in that climactic scene...and it's a lot to process.

“Ah, it’s complicated…” Dinklage told EW. “A lot of the time with Tyrion, it’s professional and personal. Obviously, he has feelings for Daenerys. He loves her — or thinks he does. She’s awe-inspiring. He’s questioning that because he doesn’t have a good track record for falling in love. There’s jealousy wrapped up in there."

If you think that's heavy, pause to realize that Tyrion has also known Jon Snow much longer, including time spent with him at Castle Black when he first joined the Night's Watch.

"He loves Jon Snow, too," Dinklage elaborated. "They’re the two people he has the most in common with, in a way — they’re both outsiders in their own families who have refused to follow the path their family has taken, and hopefully for the better. He’s wondering how smart of a move [Jon and Dany getting romantically involved is], because passion and politics don’t mix well. He knows the two of them getting together could be very dangerous.”

Dangerous not least because they're related or because they forged an intimidating alliance which Cersei plans to destabilize before it can oust her from the throne. Also, ice zombies. That first.

In true Tyrion fashion, Dinklage made a quick joke when he was first asked about that moment. What was his character thinking as he stood outside the door, his expression disconcerted?

“Keep it down over there, I’m trying to get some sleep!”

Game of Thrones returns in 2019.
