Picnic At Hanging Rock is a cult film known as a seminal classic in the Australian canon.

It's inspired endless music videos, fashion collections and directors since it's 1975 release, so it's only fitting that someone decided to breathe fresh life into the story of a bunch of girls who go missing under spooky circumstances.

Mumbrella report that Foxtel have commissioned the project for a six-part mini series with Fremantle International announcing that they will be pushing the series out to international audiences.

As much-discussed in the Mashable office, the fictitious tale is widely believed to be a true story, a historical recount of a terrible moment in the nation's young life; but it ain't. The truth isn't out there.

Regardless, fluff the couch cushions and brush up your tolerance for suspense and unresolved mystery, because Foxtel are saying the show will premiere on Australian screens in 2017.
