A pizza delivery man picked up an unexpected companion while dropping off pies this week.

While out on delivery, Steve Donovan says he spotted Mr. Snickers, a lost dog, running across a busy four-lane road and in need of a ride back home.

Donovan shared his story on Reddit's r/aww and included a photo of his temporary delivery companion. For 20 minutes, Papa John's had an unofficial new employee out on delivery duty.

And though Donovan acknowledged that his boss might punish him for going off route to deliver Mr. Snickers to address labeled on his collar, he knew he had to help the lost dog get home.

"I have a strict policy of stopping and chasing stray dogs I see," he wrote on Reddit.

After delivering a few pies together, Donovan made the trip across town to return the dog to its owner.

As for how his employer might react to news of his mid-delivery dog rescue, Donovan isn't wildly concerned about repercussions.

In his own words: "Lost dogs > pizza."
