Cargo plane overshoots runway during a storm in Italy, ends up on a road
A cargo plane operating for the shipping company DHL overran a runway at Bergamo's Orio al Serio International Airport in Italy on Friday, and came to a stop perched precariously over a provincial highway road.
The plane, a Boeing 737-400F, attempted to land as heavy showers and thunderstorms were moving through the Milan area in northern Italy early in the morning around 4 a.m. local time.
The flight originated at Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris.

Weather is a leading contributor to aircraft accidents worldwide, and is likely to be a primary suspect in this incident as well.
Thunderstorms can cause extreme turbulence and shifting winds that can cause landing and departing aircraft to have difficulty remaining airborne or stopping on time on a particular runway.
The crew escaped the plane unharmed, despite significant damage to the plane.

This incident was the second serious aviation accident this week, following the crash landing of an Emirates Airlines Boeing 777-300 at Dubai International Airport on Wednesday.
That incident destroyed the airliner, but miraculously, all the passengers walked away largely unharmed.
