LAS VEGAS -- Here's a toy I could have used as a 10-year-old modeling clay fanatic: Hasbro's Play-Doh Touch Shape to Life Studio.

This interactive experience scans a child's little clay creations into the Play-Doh Touch app where they become 3D characters. Hasbro brought the toy -- first released in November -- to this year's Showstoppers event, along with an enormous stack of Play-Doh jars begging to be opened.

Play-Doh Touch comes in two parts. The first is its free app, available for download on iPhones, iPads and Androids. To get started, a user places her clay creation on a clean white surface and scans it into the app. From there, the creation takes on a digital life of its own.

Jason Beene, who works on integrated play experiences at Hasbro and developed the product, describes the toy not so much as a game, but as a "Play-Doh playground" for your desktop creations.

The second element is the Play-Doh Touch Shape to Life Studio, which features a selection of shape cutters and molds, and a platform on which the creation sits for scanning. Certain molds come in the shapes of pre-programmed characters-- just press, un-mold and scan, and its corresponding digital character appears on screen.

Once in the app, these little digital creatures can run around in their digital world, doing whatever you want them to. Want your creature to suddenly sprout wings? Mold a pair and scan them in. Does your virtual world need some trees? Cut out, scan in. It's all pretty delightful.

The Play-Doh Touch Shape to Life Studio costs $39.99 and is currently available at Apple stores.
