Pokémon Go is asking players to do more than catch Pokémon on Earth Day this year.

On April 22, Pokémon Go developer Niantic is partnering up with a handful of local nonprofit organizations to clean and pick up trash in natural areas worldwide. If enough people participate, players will be rewarded with in-game items when catching certain types of Pokémon.

Right now, there are 37 clean-up events across the world scheduled for Earth Day — eight of them are in the United States, 23 in Europe, five in Asia, and one off the coast of Africa. You can check to see if there are any events near you on the website.

There aren't a ton of events yet, but Niantic is hoping to add more locations and is calling on players to suggest other non-governmental, environmental organizations to participate. If you want to make a suggestion, you can do so here.

Here are the rewards that players will get if enough people participate in the clean-ups:

  • If 1,500 players clean up trash: Unlock 2x Stardust when catching Ground-, Water-, and Grass-type Pokémon

  • If 3,000 players clean up trash: Unlock 3x Stardust when catching Ground-, Water-, and Grass-type Pokémon

Niantic is hoping to host the most coordinated cleanups in a 48-hour period.
