An artwork in Wales, made with thousands of handmade ceramic poppies, is stopping people in their tracks.

The red flowers have been poured from the window of a Welsh castle as part of an exhibition to honour World War I soldiers.

The work, entitled Weeping Window, marks the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, in which Welsh fusiliers played an important role.

Some of the poppies came from another sculpture which went on show at the Tower of London in 2014 and attracted five million visitors. For that project, Paul Cummins created a field of 888,246 poppies, each representing the death of a member of the Allied forces.

"The poppies have a remarkable ability to bring generations together to share stories of the First World War," said Nigel Hinds, executive producer of the exhibition. "Caernarfon Castle is a poignant and fitting place for Weeping Window to be presented as part of its tour of the UK."

Designer Tom Piper said: “We have got over 5,000 poppies here, representing probably a fraction of the Royal Welch Fusiliers who died in the First World War.”
