A new report claims that the painkiller Percocet was in Prince's system at the time of the iconic musician's April 21 death.

But a source tells The Minneapolis Star Tribune that it's unclear whether the painkiller caused Prince's death at the age of 57.

On Wednesday, the Star Tribune reported that Prince had arranged to meet with an addiction doctor "in an attempt to kick an addiction to painkillers." That same day, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Attorney's Office announced that they were joiningthe  Carver County Sheriff's Office in the investigation.

A law enforcement official told the Associated Press that investigators were looking into whether Prince died from an overdose, and whether an overdose may have prompted Prince's plane to make an emergency landing in Illinois the week before.

Prince was pronounced dead at 10:07 a.m. on April 21 after his body was found in an elevator. In a press conference on April 22, Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson said that an autopsy had been performed but that results could take weeks. At the time, he said investigators had no reason to believe the musician's death was a suicide, and that there were "no signs of obvious trauma."

The Carver County Sherriff's Office and DEA would not comment on The Star Tribune's report to Mashable
