AMC will play 'Purple Rain' at 87 U.S. theaters this weekend

They only want to one time see you laughing.

With Prince fans still in mourning, the largest U.S. theater chain is putting Purple Rain on 87 screens across the U.S. starting this Saturday (April 23) and running through Thursday (April 28).

Though Prince was already becoming a major force in pop music at the time, the 1984 film -- a modest critical and box office success with more than $68 million domestic -- launched him to rock-god status and ensured instant-classic status for the soundtrack, which sold more than 25 million copies worldwide.

In the (very) loosely autobiographical story, Prince plays The Kid, a Minneapolis musician struggling to escape a troubled home life. His trials include a few electrifying performances (all set at the city's legendary First Avenue Club), leading up to his performance of a new ballad titled "Purple Rain."

If you haven't seen it, it's worth seeing on the big screen, if nothing else than to hear the seminal soundtrack through your local AMC's big speakers.
