On Friday morning, Qantas passengers flying from Newman, Australia to Perth had quite the scare.

Upon landing at Perth Airport around 11:36 a.m. local time, the flight's 97 passengers and five crew members were promptly evacuated from the aircraft after hydraulic issues filled the plane with fumes and smoke.

An airport spokeswoman told PerthNow that the pilot of the Fokker 100 aircraft reported hydraulic issues upon descent into Perth but "all passengers disembarked safely from the aircraft via emergency slides and were bussed to the terminal."

PerthNow reported that two people from the flight were taken to the hospital with minor injuries and one woman "had to have her eyes flushed to remove the fuel."

Ross Jenkins, a passenger on the evacuated plane, told PerthNow that while he saw no smoke onboard he smelled a kerosene-like substance. "We landed right at the tail end of the airport which I thought was unusual,” he said, and explained that he heard the captain yell, "evacuate, evacuate, evacuate."

Following the incident, Qantas made a statement confirming that all passengers and crew were safe and accounted for. Though the airline said no emergency landing was requested, police, fire crews and St. John Ambulance were at the scene "as a normal precaution."

According to the airline, engineers are now inspecting the QantasLink/Network Aviation aircraft involved in the incident.

"We’d like to thank the professionalism of the crew on board the aircraft for ensuring the safety of our customers. We’d also like to thank the cooperation and understanding of the customers onboard," Qantas said.

In January 2016, Qantas was crowned "Safest Airline" for the third year in a row by AirlineRatings.com for its impressive fatality-free record.
