Ringo Starr is joining artists like Bruce Springsteen in protesting North Carolina's House Bill 2 by canceling an upcoming show in the state.

The former Beatle was scheduled to perform at the Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary on June 18. He announced on Wednesday that he's pulling out in protest of the law's "bigotry."

"I'm sorry to disappoint my fans in the area, but we need to take a stand against this hatred," Starr said in a statement on his Facebook page. "Spread peace and love."

The law requires that transgender people use bathrooms and locker rooms that are designated for "their biological sex."

"How sad that they feel that this group of people cannot be defended," Starr added.

After Springsteen canceled his show in Greensboro, Stevie Van Zandt told reporters backstage at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony that "this really vile and evil discrimination is starting to spread state to state and we thought ... we better take a stand right now and catch it early."

Similarly, Bryan Adams recently canceled a show in Mississippi to protest House Bill 1523, which allows businesses in the state  to refuse service to LGBT couples if it conflicts with their religious beliefs.

"I cannot in good conscience perform in a State where certain people are being denied their civil rights due to their sexual orientation," Adams wrote.
