LONDON -- The Trainspotting sequel is on its way, people.

On Sunday, Scottish actor Robert Carlyle (a.k.a. the memorably terrifying Francis Begbie) appeared with author Irvine Welsh in Edinburgh's Usher Hall.

The two appeared together to mark the 20th anniversary of Trainspotting, the Evening Standard reports.

"We start shooting, I understand, in the middle of May and I think it's going to be pretty much 50-50 between Edinburgh and Glasgow," said Carlyle.

"What I will say is that all the characters are exactly where you would want them to be.

"The strength of this new script is the fact that the narrative is a bit stronger than it was in the original."

Carlyle said that in the original film, it was hard to remember what the characters did other than getting together and the drug deal at the end.

"This has maybe got a wee bit more to it in terms of what they've been up to through the years," he explained.

"You learn a lot about Renton, Sick Boy and indeed Begbie and where their heads are at."

At the moment details of the sequel are limited (it's as yet untitled), but it's thought that the script will be based on Porno, Welsh's later novel which takes place 10 years after the events of Trainspotting and features the same set of characters.

The only cast currently linked to the project on IMDb are Ewan McGregor (Renton), Jonny Lee Miller (Sick Boy), Robert Carlyle (Begbie) and Ewen Bremner (Spud). The screenplay has been written by John Hodge, and Danny Boyle will direct.
