Sir Roger Moore, the legendary British actor who played James Bond in seven films and Simon Templar in The Saint, has died aged 89, his family has said.

"It is with a heavy heart that we must announce our loving father, Sir Roger Moore, has passed away today in Switzerland after a short but brave battle with cancer," Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian Moore announced.

"The love with which he was surrounded in his final days was so great it cannot be quantified in words alone."

Moore was best known for playing the third James Bond between 1973 and 1985 and Simon Templar in The Saint between 1962 and 1969. He became a Unicef goodwill ambassador in 1991.
