Baseball great Roy Halladay died in a plane crash near the coast of Florida Tuesday, police confirmed.

The talented pitcher, born Harry Leroy Halladay, was piloting the plane over the Gulf of Mexico when it crashed, according to ESPN.

Halladay was one of the game's top pitchers during his playing time. He was one of a handful of Major League Baseball pitchers who has won a Cy Young award in both the American and National leagues. His no-hitter for the Phillies over the Reds in the 2010 National League Division Series was only the second post-season no-hitter in MLB history.

On the mound, he topped 15 wins in eight different seasons and hit the 20-win mark three separate times. He was also known for his durability, leading either league in complete games, now a rarity, a total of seven times. Halladay retired after his 2013 season on the Phillies.

Here's his 2010 no-hitter:

Once the Pasco County Sheriff's Department in Florida confirmed the baseball great's death, the online tributes and memories started coming in -- and for the first time at 280 characters with Twitter's recently expanded character limit.

Former MLB teammates, fans, athletes, and even the sheriff's department posted about Halladay's death.

UPDATE Nov. 7, 3:15 p.m. PT: More statements from Halladay's former team and the MLB came in following the announcement of his death.
