If the British royal family members were 'Game of Thrones' characters

LONDON -- If you had to compare Westeros to any country in the world, Great Britain would probably be one of the first to spring to mind.

Obviously there are fewer dragons and hideous, bloody Civil Wars, but you only have to look at the Game of Thrones map and see the links to the old English medieval feudal system to see where George R. R. Martin may have gotten some of his inspiration.

This got us thinking about how our actual, modern-day royals might fare if they were in the Game of Thrones universe -- and, more specifically, which characters would they be?

Will and Kate -- Robb and Talisa Stark

Kate and William’s royal nuptials were a landmark moment for the royal family. Kate Middleton’s parents aren’t of royal blood -- they met when they were both working for British Airways. It’s hardly a rags to riches story, as Kate’s parents are millionaires, but that didn’t do much to change their status as "commoners" in the eyes of the royal family. Still, Kate’s a fully fledged royal now that she’s wed to her one true love William (former teenage heartthrob), and she’s succeeded in bringing the royal fam’ into the 21st century.

Why are they Robb and Talisa?

Will and Kate were a massive talking point among fans of the royal family when they were getting together, sort of like Robb and Talisa were among Thrones fans (back in the good old days before everything went horribly wrong for the Starks, anyway). Basically, they're both power couples. And although the Royal Wedding and the Red Wedding were complete polar opposites, both occasions were arguably just as memorable (just for very, very different reasons).

Prince Harry -- Jon Snow

Prince Harry is beloved by many. His strawberry red locks and boyish good looks have made him something of a cross-generational heartthrob. But Harry’s more than just a pretty face. Following in his mother -- Princess Diana's -- footsteps, he’s also heavily involved in charity work (he even founded his own charity, Sentebale).

Why is he Jon Snow?

They may have totally different hairstyles, but they both share a similar brooding intensity. Like Harry, Jon's also a pretty charitable guy -- just look at the way he helped all those stranded wildlings at Hard Home.

Queen Elizabeth II -- Daenerys Targaryen

The Queen is the nation’s -- nay, the world’s -- favourite nonagenarian. She’s also pretty darn badass. She’s been ruling this sceptred isle since 1952, and she’s done a damn fine job of it. According to this year’s Forbes ranking, Queen Elizabeth II is the 29th most powerful woman in the world. She also loves her corgis A LOT.

Why is she Daenerys?

It had to be really, didn't it? We were torn between Daenerys and Olenna Tyrell for awhile, but we went with Khaleesi in the end because she's clearly the most badass of them all. And, in case you'd forgotten, Queen Elizabeth II is also a monumental badass. And although corgis and dragons aren't really comparable, they both clearly have a way with animals.

Prince Philip -- Tywin Lannister

To say that Prince Philip is outspoken is a bit of an understatement. He’s forever getting himself into trouble and saying things that he definitely shouldn’t. He’s by far the least politically correct member of the Royal Family, but, despite mass consternation, he still DGAF.

Why is he Tywin Lannister?

Admittedly Prince Philip is less intimidating than his Lannister counterpart, but he's definitely just as blunt. Also they sort of look a little bit similar, kind of.

Mike Tindall -- The Mountain

Former rugby player Mike Tindall is part of The Royal Family 2.0. He might not be of noble stock, but Mike more than makes up for this in his sporting prowess -- something the royal family values highly. Mike is pretty hench as a result of his rugby career, so you probs wouldn’t want to mess with him.

Why is he The Mountain?

Although Mike Tindall isn't quite as ginormous as The Mountain, he'd almost certainly be the top royal family pick for any trial-by-combat type scenarios. The guy did play for the England rugby team, after all.

Princess Beatrice -- Renly Baratheon

Beatrice’s elaborate headgear at Kate and Wills’ wedding prompted something of a Photoshop battle. It was a lotta look, but she pulled it off.

Why is she Renly Baratheon?

We're not going to lie, this one's pretty much based solely on the hats.

Prince Charles -- Varys

Prince Charles loves writing letters. Like, A LOT. His problem is that he just cares *too* much. In between 2006 and 2009, Charles took it upon himself to lobby Labour ministers about environmental and health issues, but his handwriting was a bit of a mess. His letters were nicknamed the “black spider memos,” which makes them sound a heck of a lot worse than they actually are.

Why is he Varys?

They couldn't look less alike, but they're both linked by their shared love of written correspondence. Charles likes writing letters, Varys has a network of contacts he regularly stays in touch with; Varys is also known as the Spider, Charles wrote "black spider" memos (see, it sort of makes sense). It's also worth remembering that Charles is next in line for the throne; although Varys won't be sitting on the Iron Throne himself, there's every chance he'll be standing right beside the person who does.
