This couple has been together 62 years and are now separated for the saddest reasons

"The saddest photo I have ever taken"

If you haven't cried today and want to shed a tear, this might do the trick.

Wolf Gottschalk, 83, and his wife Anita, 81 have been married since 1954. Their granddaughter, Ashley Bartyik, posted a photo of the two on Facebook, and their heartbreaking story of love and separation has gone viral.

Bartyik snapped a picture the pair comforting each other at a transitional facility for those trying to get into a nursing home. She explains that they have been "separated for 8 months due to backlogs and delays by our health care system, whom have the power to have my grandpa moved to the same care facility as my grandmother."

Wolf was recently diagnosed with dementia and the family is worried about his memory of Anita fading if the two are separated for much longer. Additionally, the post explains the strain of transporting them daily to see each other, and details worries about treatment.

"He isn't even getting proper care where he is, including no physical therapy which we were promised (the only reason he is in a wheelchair is because it has been 8 months of no walking!!)," Ashely wrote, speaking about healthcare provider Fraser Health.

The image was posted to encourage people to share their story so the two can finally be together. So far over 3,000 people have shared their story.

"We want justice for my grandparents who after 62 years together deserve to spend their last moments in the same building," Ashley said. Since the photo went viral, they have not heard from Fraser Health.
