Bollywood superstar Salman is facing criticism for comparing himself to a "raped woman" while talking about filming wrestling scenes for his forthcoming film Sultan. The 50-year-old actor has been slammed on social media for an insensitive comment that trivialise rape.

Khan made the comparison during an interview to promote Sultan, in which he plays a wrestler. "While shooting, during those six hours, there’d be so much of lifting and thrusting on the ground involved. That was tough for me because if I was lifting, I’d have to lift the same 120 kilo guy 10 times for 10 different angles. And likewise, get thrown that many times on the ground. This act is not repeated that many times in the real fights in the ring," Khan said. "When I used to walk out of the ring after the shoot, I used to feel like a raped woman. I couldn't walk straight."

As the people around him laughed, Khan realised his faux pas and said, "I don't think I should have". Later in the interview, Khan also described women as the only "vice" he hasn't quit.

Khan has not issued any statement after the controversy, but his father Salim Khan apologised on his behalf. "Undoubtedly what Salman said is wrong, the simile, example and the context. (But) the intention was not wrong," he tweeted.

Khan has received a notice from India's National Commission for Women, asking him to issue an apology within a week. On Twitter, angry users have been tweeting with the hashtag #InsensitiveSalman, while Khan's massive legion of fans and supporters have been defending him by tweeting with #SalmanMisquoted.
