You know when you wake up, head pounding, and you try to piece together what happened the night before?

And then you realize you won an Oscar?

Well, maybe not exactly. But Sam Smith certainly knows what that's like, now he's participating in the time-honored tradition of apologizing through his hangover.

After Smith implied during his speech that he believed he was the first openly gay man to win an Oscar -- which he is not -- filmmaker Dustin Lance Black tweeted a correction and warned Smith to back off his fiancé, Olympian Tom Daley.

Black, an openly gay man, took home the Best Original Screenplay prize in 2009 for Milk, which is a movie about an openly gay man winning something. He's one of several openly gay winners throughout the years.

Now Smith is trying to clear things up on social media.

He also posted a couple Instagrams that are a little less apologetic.

Dustin Lance Black responded, encouraging Smith to check out more movies by gay filmmakers.
