LONDON -- A frantic appeal has been launched in Lancashire, UK, to track down a stuffed dog that was last seen flying 25 km above the earth.

Sam is the fluffy mascot of Morecambe Bay Primary School and Midland Hotel. On Tuesday, he was attached to a helium balloon and launched into space.

He hasn't been seen since.

After the helium balloon burst, Sam's space equipment fell back to earth and landed in a field near Burnley, the Burnley Express reports.

Sam, however, was nowhere in sight.

Here's some footage from his voyage.

So what happened to Sam?

“Our footage indicates that one of the helium balloon tethers got tangled with the mascot when it burst at peak altitude and the freefall part of the flight commenced," Chris Rose from SentIntoSpace.com told the Burnley Express.

“We do not have any data on the aerodynamics of a toy dog or its terminal velocity, but we’re pretty sure Sam landed within a 40-50 mile radius of Burnley.

“He could have landed in North Lancashire or as far afield as York, Sheffield, or the Peak District.”

Anyone with any information on Sam's whereabouts is urged to call English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues (01539 433773) or contact BBC Lancashire. A complimentary stay at Midland Hotel is on offer if he is found and returned safely.
