Here are the cities most hooked on audiobooks and the ones that could listen more

Audiobooks are having a renaissance, and 2016 is only continuing that trend.

To better understand the listening habits of book lovers, reading subscription service Scribd took a deep dive into the world of audiobooks. The company analyzed 3.9 million hours of listening behavior compiled between Dec. 1, 2014 and Jan. 31, 2016. With that data, Scribd then figured out which cities and states engage in the most literary listening... and which are lacking in audiobook time. Turns out New York is less well-(audio)read than you think.

  • The most tuned in States: Residents of Idaho, Utah, and Maine listen to the most audiobooks. Those who live in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey are behind the auditory times and listen to the least.

  • Cities that listened to the most audiobooks: Salt Lake City residents are clearly the savviest commuters, listening to more audiobooks than the rest of the country, followed closely by Minneapolis, Charlotte, Sacramento and Omaha.

  • Cities that listened to the least audiobooks: People in Madison, Wisconsin, listen to the least amount of audiobooks. Brooklyn, Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Arlington also lack in audiobook listening.

  • Most popular listening devices: Mobile is by far the most popular device for audiobooks, with more than half listening on iOS and a quarter listening on Android.

  • Most popular genres: Fiction & Literature, Mystery, Thriller & Crime and Romance; however, they found a healthy breadth of listening across all genres.
