If Alfred Hitchcock's thriller The Birds scarred you, prepare to have your old phobias return.

Tens of thousands of seagulls swarmed a landfill in northeast China's Dalian city on Sunday. They were in search of food, because the sea -- their main source of food -- hadn't thawed out yet as a result of the colder and prolonged winter.

The unusually cold weather hitting east Asia has affected China hard. Schools were suspended and emergency workers set on alert at the start of the year, with nearly 90% of the country dipping below negative Celsius. 

Even southern cities like Guangzhou, which are accustomed to having subtropical temperatures, had snow for the first time since 1967 in January, the Associated Press has reported.
