Sean Penn's The Last Face might be the last time he shows his own at the Cannes Film Festival for a while.

The film, which Penn directed, was ripped apart by critics for its plot, pacing and seemingly offensive portrayals of Africans. Last Face stars Charlize Theron and Javier Bardem as aid workers who fall in love, and work in various west African countries.

Here's a quick sample of what some reviews are saying:

  • The Hollywood Reporter: "A backdrop of Third World atrocity, suffering and merciless human-rights violations serves as the canvas for a faux-profound Hollywood love story in Sean Penn's stunningly self-important but numbingly empty cocktail of romance and insulting refugee porn, The Last Face."

  • The Guardian: "Black characters are ciphers at best. They suffer and they grab at the clothing of our attractive leads, but they get minimal dialogue and zero depth ... This is not a film about Penn helping people, it’s a film to show how much he wants to be seen helping people."

  • Indiewire: "Even without its mopey, painfully on-the-nose dialogue and ponderous story, The Last Face sets itself up for failure with its premise, and Penn's apparent inability to recognize it as such. It's his worst movie."

Penn, for his part, doesn't care about the bad reviews.

“I stand by the film as it is, and everyone is going to be entitled to their response,” Penn told Variety

Viewers and critics alike have also completely slammed the film on Twitter.
