'The Secret Life of Pets' fetches $103.2 million at the box office
There are plenty of pet owners who wish their beloved furry friend would walk and talk like people when no one is looking,
That premise helped propel The Secret Life of Pets into the top domestic box office spot for its opening weekend. Current estimates points to a $103.2 million take for Universal's animated family feature.
That's more than enough to cement the Pets opening weekend as the sixth-highest of all time for animated features. And we're only a few weeks removed from Finding Dory claiming the number one spot on that same list with its $135.1 million opening.

Even as an estimate, it's well ahead of Disney Pixar's Inside Out ($90.4 million) in the seven spot. Though a shift from Universal's estimate probably won't break Pets into the top five; Shrek 2's bar of $108 million is likely too high.
It was a relatively quiet weekend at the box office otherwise. The other newcomer, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, opened at number four -- behind The Legend of Tarzan ($20.6 million) and Dory ($20.4 million) -- with an estimated $16.6 million.
It was a healthy-yet-unexceptional opening for the Fox comedy, which stars Zac Efron, Anna Kendrick, Adam DeVine and Aubrey Plaza. Of greater note is Dory's performance, which brings it to $422.6 million in domestic sales for 2016. That's more than enough to take the current year's number one spot from Captain America: Civil War ($406.2 million).
The Purge: Election Year rounds out the top five with an estimated $11.7 million at the domestic box office. Although the 63% percent drop from the Universal thriller's opening weekend is slightly steeper than average, the movie is doing great business -- roughly $58.1 million total on an estimated $10 million budget.
