After Trump's election, this U.S. leader got as far away as possible
As America came to grips with the upset electoral victory of Donald J. Trump for president, Secretary of State John Kerry -- himself a former presidential candidate -- was as far away from Washington as humanly possible.
On Thursday, Kerry became the highest-ranking U.S. official ever to visit Antarctica. He traveled to McMurdo Station, which is operated by the National Science Foundation. Kerry is getting a firsthand glimpse of the effects of climate change in Antarctica and the science research conducted there.
According to the State Department, Kerry is also planning to travel to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. With these travels, Kerry also becomes the first secretary of state to set foot on both of the world's land-based ice sheets, having visited Greenland in 2015. From Antarctica, Kerry will head to Morocco, where U.N. climate talks are taking place.
