Texas town erects selfie statue because it's 2016
Cell phones and selfies are apparently the swords of our time.
Sugar Land, Texas has become the center of scrutiny over a statue recently erected in front of the city's town hall. The statue features two smiling woman, slightly hunched over as one of them snaps a selfie with a phone.

Outrage grew over the statue, and many were upset because they considered it a waste of taxpayer money, but the statue was actually donated by a town resident.

According to documents from the town, the statues were donated by resident Sandy Levin. A press release from the town states that the statue is part of a 10-piece collection, and will be located at Sugar Land Memorial Park, Oyster Creek Park and Fire Station 4 in First Colony.
"There was no objection to the donation and proposed location so the project progressed," the agenda request reads.
The document also states that "the sculptures will be of people representing activities that occur in the Square."
The other statue in the square is of a man playing guitar.
In the press release, the town backed up its approval of the statue.
"The inclusion of sculpture in the Town Square plaza aligns with the continued vision of the City and the Legacy Foundation’s commitment to establish cultural arts amenities that 'provide and/or support activities and facilities that enrich the artistic, cultural, educational and historical character of Sugar Land.'"
