7 best films about summer romance that aren't by Nicholas Sparks

Everything is hotter in the summer.

Can we all agree that there is something about the idea of summer romance that is just so damn desirable?

Maybe it's the lack of clothing and the general lack of responsibilities. Or maybe it's knowing that you will only have to commit for a few months before fall rolls around.

Since not all of us are fortunate enough to meet the human of our dreams while vacationing at our big, fancy lake house, we have to live vicariously through film.

In no particular order, here are some of the best films that capture the joy (and sometimes heartbreak) of summer romance.

And to make sure you get the most out of this list, we have neglected all Nicholas Sparks films. Cause we get it. That's his thing. Moving on.

1. Dirty Dancing

This is basically the perfect formula for a summer love movie. You got a wealthy girl on vacation with her uptight parents, add in an attractive bad boy plus an epic dance scene at the end...really what more could you want? Nobody puts Dirty Dancing in the corner.

2. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Of the four girls, there is no doubt Lena had the best summer. Forbidden love in Greece is arguably hotter than forbidden love anywhere else. However, this film certainly creates unrealistic expectations for a summer abroad.

3. Wet Hot American Summer

You don't get just one summer romance in this film, you get roughly five (depending on how you define romance). This spoof of teen sex comedies is definitely the funniest film on the list if you're looking for something a little less mushy and sentimental.

4. Before Sunrise

OK, sure it was a romance that lasted a day (not counting the other films in the trilogy) but within those 24 hours they traveled through Vienna, had deep conversations about life, listened to some beautiful music, and engaged in outdoor sex. They hit up all the bases of an ideal summer fling.

5. Adventureland

This film realistically captures the awkwardness of young love and the mundane nature of small town life. It's a great watch for anyone feeling that summer-time restlessness.

6. Roman Holiday

A true cinematic classic, of course, but can we please discuss whether it has the right to be considered a romantic comedy? If you have not seen it, we won't spoil anything but seriously, watch and decide for yourself.

7. The Man in the Moon

More people need to talk about how good this film is. It stars Reese Witherspoon in her first ever on-screen role and is filled with Southern charm, young love, and a strong bond between sisters. Be warned though, if you have a heart you will cry.

There ya have it folks. These are some quality films to watch when you are alone in your air-conditioned room living your best summer life. Honestly, who needs love when you have wifi and take-out, right?

We only have a few more weeks to go, so let's make 'em count.
