It's annoying enough that many Rio Olympics events take place overnight in Australia, but it's even worse if you're a sleep deprived fan unable to stream the events.

Thousands of complaints about the "Olympics on 7" app, which was created by Australian TV network and Olympic Games rights holder Seven Network, have flooded the internet over the weekend.

The app launched on Saturday and offers a A$20 (US$15.22) "premium" option (free for Telstra customers), which allows viewers to watch events that aren't being shown on television.

Viewers ripped into the television network, complaining of the app crashing and freezing, long connection times, video streams not working, and the high number of advertisements that are being displayed.

On Google Play, the "Olympics on 7" app currently has a 1.5 star rating, as well on Apple's App Store. Some of these negative reviews are *admittedly* pretty amusing.

A Seven spokesperson told Mumbrella that the app issues were related to the streaming provider in Rio De Janeiro being unable to keep up.

"The unprecedented demand for live sports streaming from Rio Olympics has had a massive impact on streaming architecture," the spokesperson told the publication.

"We apologise for inconvenience that this is causing and doing our best to restore streams soon. Users may have experienced issues accessing the app and live streams due to the demand. Our service provider in Rio delivering the 'Olympics on 7' app is working to resolve this and the impact from the heavy demand. Again, we apologise."

Mashable Australia has contacted Seven for comment.
