As Shannon Purser, a.k.a. Barb on Stranger Things, was cleaning out her room Monday, she found old headshots, a Nintendo DS and something that reminded her of a dark time in her life.

She turned to Twitter to share her finding and disclose her history with self-harm.

Purser posted a photo of a blade, which she said she was throwing away.

"*TRIGGER WARNING* I haven't self-harmed in years, but I kept this around, 'just in case.' I forgot it was there & now it's in the trash," she wrote.

She also posted a powerful addendum.

"Recovery is possible. Please don't give up on yourself," she wrote.

Fans were quick to respond with words of support.

To talk to someone about self-injury or if you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, text the Crisis Text Line at 741-741 or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. For international resources, this list is a good place to start.
