The Shape of Water was the best film of 2017, according to the Academy Awards.

The Best Picture prize capped off what was a great night for the film. Earlier that night, The Shape of Water had taken home Best Director (for Guillermo del Toro), Best Score (for Alexandre Desplat), and Best Production Design (for Paul D. Austerberry, Shane Vieau, and Jeffrey A. Melvin).

The film had additionally been nominated for nine other awards, including Best Original Screenplay, Best Lead Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. It was the most-nominated picture of the 2018 Oscars race.

The Shape of Water had been considered one of the frontrunner throughout much of the 2018 race – though fellow Best Picture nominees Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Get Out also looked like strong contenders at various points.

For what it's worth, The Shape of Water was also Mashable's pick for the No. 1 movie of 2017.
