Gunman and victim dead after six-hour siege in Sydney

UPDATE: March 8, 2016, 8:30 a.m. AEDT A 30-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man have been charged following Monday's deadly siege. The man was charged with discharging a firearm in a public place, and both were charged with conceal serious indictable offence. Both were arrested at the scene by police. 

On Monday afternoon, police entered a building in Sydney, Australia where a gunman was believed to be keeping people hostage. Inside, they found three people hiding in a corner and the gunman dead.

It followed a siege in an industrial complex in the Sydney suburb of Ingleburn that lasted more than six hours. The situation started around 10:45 a.m. local time, when a 43-year-old man was shot dead and two others injured.

"Officers attended and located three people with gunshot wounds. One man died at the scene," police said in an emailed statement. "Two men have been taken to hospital for treatment. Their conditions aren’t known. A police operation is continuing at the business and a perimeter has been established."

Following the shooting, tactical police surrounded the area and undertook the lengthy operation, which ended at 5 p.m. local time with the discovery of the deceased 33-year-old male gunman. He sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. 

The three hostages were escorted from the building by police and taken away in an armoured police vehicle late in the afternoon.

In the industrial park there is a sign writing factory, a printing business and a cafe, among other businesses. It is not yet clear which business was targeted or the motive behind the shooting. 

Police said in a press conference at 6:15 p.m. local time they have a suspect in mind, but would not reveal his identity or any motive behind the shooting. The man used a "long-arm" weapon.

Dozens of police officers attended the scene. While, multiple ambulances could be seen in the vicinity of the industrial estate.

During the operation, the area was locked down and the public were told to stay away. At 6:15 p.m. the operation was declared "resolved" in a statement by police.
