Singapore Airlines plane makes emergency landing, just before right engine bursts into flames

SINGAPORE -- A Singapore Airlines plane bound for Milan caught fire on the runway on Monday morning, shortly after returning to Singapore to make an emergency landing.

Flight SQ368 left at about 2.25 a.m. local time, but the pilot was forced to turn back due to an engine oil warning message.

When the plane landed at about 6:50 a.m. its right engine caught fire, but Changi Airport says the blaze was put out within minutes.

All 222 passengers and 19 crew members were evacuated safely with no injuries, said Singapore Airlines.

Channel NewsAsia reports that moments after the plane landed safely to applause from the passengers, people saw a spark and the plane's right wing burst into flames.

Lee said that the flight turned around after over two hours into the journey, and that she could smell gasoline after about three hours in the air.

The passengers stayed onboard during the five to 10 minutes it took for emergency services to put out the blaze.
