Thanks to Donald Trump's son, the Republican candidate is now being overshadowed by a candy.

On Monday evening, Donald Trump Jr. riled up the internet with a ridiculous meme, comparing the country's current Syrian refugee situation to a bowl of Skittles, and since then utter madness unfolded.

According to the latest statistics from GoogleTrends, as of Tuesday at 10:33 GMT -- after the candy began trending on social platforms -- the United States showed a nine time spike in the search term "Skittles," making it more widely searched than Trump himself.

Following the meme upset caused by Donald Trump Jr.'s original tweet, Mars made a statement distancing itself from the analogy by declaring, "Skittles are candy; refugees are people," which people greatly appreciated.

Though the candy company has spoken out, the internet is clearly not ready to let go of the blasphemous image now associated with the Trump/Pence campaign, as shown by the latest Google Trends results.

The graph shows a notable spike in "Skittles" searches throughout the last four hours, with the peak on Sept. 20 at 10:33 GMT exceeding all "Donald Trump" searches. So if we think of Google Trends in terms of the election, Skittles are essentially beating Trump in the "polls." What a time to be alive.

As of Tuesday morning, the candy continued to triumph in the spotlight and the hashtag #SkittlesWelcome -- full of more tweets refuting the comparison -- began trending on Twitter.

Who could have ever imagined that this close to our 2016 election we'd all be furiously debating Skittles.
