'Sleepy Hollow' shocks fans with major, controversial twist
WARNING: Spoilers. Very, very upsetting spoilers.
Sleepy Hollow just capped off Season 3 with a major move that will forever change the series.
In its Friday season finale, the show bid farewell to Lt. Abbie Mills -- and, subsequently, star Nicole Beharie -- whose on-screen bond with Tom Mison's Ichabod Crane drove the first three seasons of the show.

In true heroic fashion, the character essentially sacrificed herself to save the world.
"The finale featuring the tragic death of Abbie Mills was a very dramatic ending and a bold move for the show, but Sleepy Hollow has always been known for its shocking finales. We feel we provided a wonderfully poignant conclusion for Abbie and showed some of the best moments between the Witnesses that we’ve seen on-screen," Sleepy Hollow producers said in a statement via Fox. "We thank Nicole Beharie for bringing Abbie and Sleepy Hollow to life. We are currently discussing Season Four, and should the series be picked up for another season, we have some exciting scenarios and new avenues we want to explore."
Fox has not yet decided whether the series will return for Season 4, but suffice to say there would be some new characters introduced if it does.
In the final minutes of the episode, as Ichabod Crane visited the grave of his friend, he was visited by Ezra, who revealed that Abbie's soul lives on in someone else, as per the Witness rules.
Thus, it is Crane's job to find this person -- before someone else does.
"Wherever you are, whoever you are, I'll find you," he says as the episode ends.
The question: Will fans stick around to meet this Abbie-souled person? TBD.
For the moment, the grief is just starting to set in from the shocking moment.

For her part, Beharie tells TVLine in a statement that she felt like the character "has done all she was meant to do"
Fans -- especially those who long championed a romantic relationship between the two characters -- remain devastated, however.
