SMRT issued a statement saying its records show that the two were part of a team that went down to the track to investigate an alarm triggered by some signalling equipment. They had been authorised to access the track, and were walking one behind another on the walkway to access the site of the alarm.
The company and police are conducting a more detailed investigation to find out how the accident happened.
After the accident occurred, personnel closed the station for over two hours, before reopening it at about 2 p.m..
